Long term planning in your Bullet Journal

Long term planning, the Alastair Johnston method

Future planning in the Bullet Journal is often a problem. The Future Log proposed in the Ryder Carroll method is a great way to plan for the upcoming six to twelve months. But we have sometimes to plan events further than a year.

Several solutions can be put in place, and it is the advantage of the Bullet Journal. You can expand your Future Log. Or create another Future Log in the middle of your notebook. But I recently discovered a new way of future planning. It is the Alastair Johnston method.

How does the Alastair Johnston method work?

The concept is very simple, but highly effective. You just have to write the months in columns, and to save space next to these columns for the upcoming events.

When you have a new event to log, just add it in the list. Write the date, and check the column of the corresponding month.

That is all!

Quite easy don’t you think?

Then, depending of your operating mode, you can go back to this page and migrate your events in your next Future Log, or in a future monthly log.

What are the advantages of this method?

For me this method has several advantages. First you can manage six to twelve months in one page. It is very compact. And you know now how much I like to optimize my notebooks.

Then, the events are written one after another. You will manage to put a lot of entries in this page. If you create your Alastair Johnston planning in the beginning of your Bullet Journal, I am sure that it will be enough for all the lifetime of your notebook.

Finally this is a very visual system. Thanks to the columns, you can see quickly the months with planned events.

Where to put this collection?

I think that you can easily put this planning just after your Future Log.

And thanks to the Alastair Johnston method, you can reduce your Future Log to six months. You can even get rid of your Future Log, and use only the Alastaire one.

Have you already used the Alastair Johnston method? What do you think about it?

Merci
